Hello everyone and welcome to The Land of the Rising Sun… in digital and informational form at least. Since I was young I’ve had a love and fascination for foreign cultures. As I grew that fascination pointed to Asian cultures, and specifically to Japan.

I began to research and lean about Japan, about their entertainment, traditions, historical landmarks, and language. I learn something new every day and continue to grow, but sometimes finding unique information can be hard to find. Everyone is familiar with Mount Fuji, but what about the little shop at the bottom of mount Fuji? What about the walking sticks that are stamped at each check point? Did you know it’s strongly urged to stay at an inn on the mountain to get some rest before reaching the top of the mountain?

These are the smaller, lesser known facts that I want to bring to you. Whether curious, and enthusiast, or someone plans on traveling, learning about smaller details of other cultures can be enriching, and rewarding.

So What’s My Story?

Growing up in Florida in the US had its cultural advantages. The US is already a melting pot of cultures, but living near a port only increased that exposure as people came into the country.

The first major event I remember in seeing a new culture was a cultural festival at my primary school. My old teacher from a previous year had a class that was assigned China. For one of their events they had Chinese fish printing. For this event they actually painted on a fish and pressed the paper to it using it as a stamp. It was strange, it was cool, it was unique, and I was hooked. Other cultures have so much to offer, how could I not be?

As the years progressed I was introduced to anime and became a fan, but I wanted to learn why there were different habits in these shows than what I was used to. Why did they take their shoes off at the door? Why did the bathrooms looks so different? It was those questions that introduced me to the Japanese culture, the art, the language, the gardening. I fell in love, and have been so ever since.

So Why Are We Here?

As much as I would love to I’m unable to travel right now. Recovery from an illness temporarily prevents me from going anywhere to far from home. However, that hasn’t stopped me from dreaming, and researching.

As it stands the information is great, but does little. I continue to find new videos, articles, books, but I can’t use that knowledge for a while. So, I want to share it. When a lot of people look up Japan they see Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. All are important topics to cover, and we may cover them, but I want to share what I’ve learned when going deeper into the culture, not just scratching the surface of it’s major landmarks; And if you get to travel to Japan, just maybe you’ll see something from this blog that perhaps you would like to visit and experience that you might not have otherwise.

What’s the Purpose of it All?

Learning about other far away places is enriching, and can even be magical. So the goal at Land of the Rising Sun is to make it easy. I want to do the research so you don’t have to. Traditions, Festivals, Holidays, Language, I plan on covering it all.

Maybe by the end of it you’ll love Japan just as much, if not more than I do.

If you ever have any questions or have a request for a topic, please feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,

Kira
